Not to beat a dead horse... A good friend of mine sent this to me today

Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.), a former Army lieutenant colonel, sends THE WEEKLY STANDARD an email commenting on the Marines' video, and has given us permission to publish it.

“I have sat back and assessed the incident with the video of our Marines urinating on Taliban corpses. I do not recall any self-righteous indignation when our Delta snipers Shugart and Gordon had their bodies dragged through Mogadishu. Neither do I recall media outrage and condemnation of our Blackwater security contractors being killed, their bodies burned, and hung from a bridge in Fallujah.
“All these over-emotional pundits and armchair quarterbacks need to chill out. Does anyone remember the two Soldiers from the 101st Airborne Division who were beheaded and gutted in Iraq?
“The Marines were wrong. Give them a maximum punishment under field grade level Article 15 (non-judicial punishment), place a General Officer level letter of reprimand in their personnel file, and have them in full dress uniform stand before their Battalion, each personally apologize to God, Country, and Corps videotaped and conclude by singing the full US Marine Corps Hymn without a teleprompter.
“As for everyone else, unless you have been shot at by the Taliban, shut your mouth, war is hell.”

  8. Wait, what? There was ENORMOUS outrage over the bodies of our Marines dragged through Mogadishu! Not only do I recall it, but it's easy to find the photos, commentary and analysis with a simple google search (which I'll spare because the photos are horrifying.)

    Meanwhile this story...

    http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/iraq/2007-06-10-fallujah-deaths_N.htm

...gives a pretty serious appraisal of what happened and what America thought...again, there was outrage.

My problem with this whole affair? Why are we outraged at the desecration of bodies when we SHOULD be outraged that THEY WERE KILLED IN THE FIRST PLACE.

War is most certainly hell. I may disagree heavily with it, and that may be how we justify taking other people's lives...to preserve our own...but it is NO excuse to do what they did after they killed them. If we excuse that, then we might as well institutionalize it the way we institutionalize the killing in the first place.

I will forgive our soldiers defending their lives and the lives of others, but that's because that is exactly THEIR JOBS. Americans did not ask them to desecrate dead bodies in the street.

  9. Sure as hell undercut what we're supposedly trying to do in the 'Stan.
i.e. "winning hearts & minds" so we can leave the place-and not it all fall apart before the next election cycle :-)

  11. One last remark. I am reminded of the famous bitter jole from WWII Pacific Theater and again from Vietnam.
Andit was Marines that made the joke: "What's the difference between the Mariunes and the Boy Scouts?
Qnswer:The boy Scouts have adult leadership." Whoever was in command certainly should have realized tha tit wasn't such a great idea to do it, and even less a great idea to tape it and get it out on the net.
